WRITTEN OFF GONDOLA CARS CONTINUE TO WORK IN UKRAINE FOR ANOTHER 5-7 YEARS TO THE DETRIMENT OF INFRASTRUCTURE
During 2018, some private companies purchased in total about 4 thousand written-off in Russia freight cars. This was reported by Alona Lebedieva, the owner of the investment and industrial holding “Aurum Group”, in an interview with GMK Center. “Gondola cars, whose service life is 22 years and which the Russian Federation is getting rid of, continue to work in Ukraine for another 5-7 years, causing irreparable damage to the railway infrastructure. And the main thing is that they can cause major accidents,” clarified Alona Lebedieva. By the way, the same information was disclosed at the Rail Cargo Spring 2019 forum, which took place on May 22.
“In 2018, about 4 thousand gondolas, which had been in use, worth $10 thousand each, were imported to Ukraine mainly from the Russian Federation. This is five times cheaper than the price of a new gondola car. The total cost amounted to UAH 11 billion. If these cars were manufactured in Ukraine, we would produce 300 thousand tons more casting and rolled products, and the industry would receive additional UAH 5 billion,” one of the forum participants confirmed.
According to Alona Lebedieva, our companies offer 30-50% more for written-off gondolas than Russian companies specializing in recovering.
Furthermore, 4 thousand renewed cars are 47% of all newly built cars by the private car-building plant for the same 2018.
